It really depends on your needs and budget. Generally speaking, tablets and Chromebooks have very comparable rental rates. PC laptops are a bit more expensive due to the extra hardware and features they offer. Chromebooks are best for users who only need web-based browsing and applications, want to use a keyboard, and have reliable access to the internet

Lots of people see a blurb that Google rents chromebooks directly for $30—however, this was a program that ended in 2012, almost 10 years ago. We’re not sure why it keeps showing up–it’s confusing. It was initially a program to get businesses to try them in hopes they would buy them.

The main reason people rent chromebooks for schools is for state-mandated electronic tests where they need a lot more chromebooks than they own. A lot of districts are already using chromebooks in the classroom, but due to security or logistical concerns, they need different machines for testing. Since these only happen once or twice a year, buying all those computers would be impractical or cost prohibitive.

Another reason is for emergencies or rapid expansion where a short-term chromebook rental can fill a gap in computing needs.

Chromebooks are less prone to viruses than Windows PCs—but we can also configure them to be secure or lock them into a “kiosk mode” to avoid misuse during testing or other rental applications.

Lots of people and institutions do, which is actually why they need to rent them occasionally. In the testing example, you need a lot of them for a short amount of time (even a couple times a year), the expense of purchasing them plus the expense of managing them is usually either prohibited by budgets, or unmanageable for most institutions.

Chromebooks work with most applications in the android store, applications that are built for ChromeOS specifically, or any web-based application that works in the chrome browser—so pretty much anything that isn’t Mac or Windows exclusive.
